Although more than 12 million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia, surprisingly little is known about the disease. There is no definitive test and no known cure. Even more inexplicable is the fact that it targets far more women than men: women are 10 times more likely to develop fibromyalgia.
Usually, a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is made only after all other causes are eliminated, making it a “diagnosis by default.” Symptoms may include anxiety or depression, sleep disturbance, fatigue and pains in the joints, muscles and skin. These symptoms can become so extreme that it affects the person’s relationships and their ability to hold down a job or even take care of themselves. It’s debilitating and frustrating as it is hard to treat and seemingly “impossible” to “cure”.
The typical protocol, if you are diagnosed with fibromyalgia, is a myriad of prescription drugs to try to quell your symptoms. Your doctor may prescribe drugs such as antidepressants, pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs to treat your symptoms, although by some estimates these drugs are effective in only 30 to 50 percent of cases. And in most instances, these drugs are associated with side effects ranging from mild to severe. Long term effects are often not known.
The good news is that many fibromyalgia sufferers find relief from their symptoms through alternative therapies, such as massage, acupuncture, yoga and relaxation techniques. These are safe, non-invasive and natural approaches. Even better news is that there is another approach available...the FDA approved medical healing device, researched by Harvard University...and it’s called the Amethyst BioMat.
While exhibiting at a local health expo, we provided free 15 minutes healing sessions on the Professional Biomat. We tracked pain levels, using the standard 10-point pain scale.
Pain levels BEFORE and AFTER the BioMat session were recorded. Of particular interest was that people who were diagnosed with Fibromyalgia had significant reductions in pain. In this particular example, we had 23 people who said they have Fibromyalgia.
Many were saying they had pain levels of about 8 when they got on the mat, and when they got off the mat, they said their pain levels had dropped to around a 2-3.
Everyone with Fibromyalgia had relief during those 15 minute sessions, except one women. We asked her if she could come back later and spend a little longer on the mat. She came back and stayed on the mat for 45 minutes. She reported back to us that that night she had the best sleep in 20 years. We had people report back to us later and say their pain levels stayed lower from 3 hours to 3 days. These were just the experiences of people experiencing a short-time on the Biomat. Obviously, longer-term benefits are seen for those who use Biomats consistently and/or sleep on the Biomat.
Your BioMat can also play a role in effective symptom management:
